How to block apps on Android: every method, honestly ranked

Digital Wellbeing, Focus mode, second user profiles, launcher tricks and physical keys — what each enforces on Android, and where each one gives way.

Android gives you more genuine enforcement than iOS does, and less consistency. What is available depends on your manufacturer, your Android version, and whether the maker shipped their own wellbeing layer on top of Google's. The methods below are ordered by how much most people should try them first; check the exact menu names against your own device, because they move.

That inconsistency is worth naming rather than glossing over, because it is most acute on exactly the phones most people in India are holding. Manufacturer skins rename these menus, relocate them, and in several cases substitute their own version of the feature. If a path below does not exist word-for-word on your phone, search Settings for "wellbeing", "focus" or "screen time" before concluding the feature is missing.

1. Digital Wellbeing app timers (free, built in)

  1. Open Settings and find Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. On some devices this is a separate app in your drawer.
  2. Tap Dashboard to see usage by app.
  3. Tap the hourglass or timer icon beside an app and set a daily limit.
  4. The app icon greys out when the limit is reached and reopening is blocked until midnight.

Unlike an iOS limit, there is no "ignore" button on the timer screen. To get the app back you have to return to Digital Wellbeing and delete the timer — which is more steps, but still entirely within your power and takes under a minute.

2. Focus mode (free, better for work blocks)

Digital Wellbeing's Focus mode pauses a chosen set of apps for a period or on a schedule. Paused apps are greyed out and their notifications are held. This is the closest free equivalent to a proper focus session.

Its weakness is a button labelled Take a break, which ends the session immediately. Like Apple's "Ignore Limit", it exists for good reasons and it is the thing you will tap.

3. A second user profile (free, genuinely strict)

Android supports multiple users on one device. Create a second profile that simply does not have the distracting apps installed, then switch to it for work. Settings → System → Multiple users.

This is one of the strictest free options available on any phone, because there is nothing to bypass — the app is not there. The cost is real: switching profiles takes a few seconds, notifications from the other profile are suppressed, and you have to set up two of everything.

Two caveats before you commit an afternoon to it. Multi-user support is one of the features some manufacturers remove from their build of Android, so check the menu exists before planning around it. And the second profile is a genuinely separate phone as far as your accounts are concerned — a second WhatsApp login, a second set of two-factor apps — which is either a clean break or a daily nuisance depending on your work.

4. A minimal launcher (free or cheap)

A text-only or heavily reduced launcher removes the icon grid your thumb has memorised. It changes the texture of picking up your phone more than any limit does, and it stops working the moment you learn where the app search is. Useful in combination, weak on its own.

5. Third-party blockers (free to subscription)

Android blockers generally work through an accessibility service: the app watches which screen is in the foreground and draws a block screen over anything on your list. This is why they ask for a permission that sounds alarming — it is the only mechanism Android offers for this job, and it is the same one screen readers use.

Because the enforcement is more capable than iOS, Android blockers can offer genuinely stricter modes: blocking the uninstall path and the relevant settings screens while a session is running. Whether a given app does that is worth checking specifically rather than inferring from the marketing.

One failure mode to rule out before blaming the app: several Android skins apply aggressive battery optimisation and will suspend background services they judge idle. If a blocker enforces perfectly for an hour and then quietly stops after the screen has been off for a while, exempt it from battery optimisation and try again before deciding it is broken.

The permission question, answered plainly

An accessibility service can read screen content. That is a real thing to be careful about, and the right response is to check what the app does with it: whether blocking works offline, whether an account is required, and whether usage data leaves the device. "We need it and here is exactly why" is a reasonable answer. Vagueness is not.

Ours is the same question turned on us, so the answer should be as checkable as the question: Spark's blocking runs on the phone, works with the network off, and your block lists and session history stay on the device rather than being uploaded. That is a claim you are entitled to test rather than take on trust — put the phone in flight mode and see whether the lock holds.

6. A physical key (paid — and Android enforces it best)

The final category moves the unlock off the device. Blocking still runs on your phone — that is the only place it can run — but re-enabling your apps requires a separate physical object to be nearby.

Spark works this way, and Android is where it can enforce most: locking is one free tap with no key needed, and while you are locked, strict mode can block the uninstall and settings routes that would otherwise let you undo it. Unlocking needs the key in range, checked with a fresh random challenge each time. Leave it in another room and the cheapest way back to the feed is a walk.

It is a Bluetooth key rather than an NFC tag, and on Android that distinction is not a detail. A large share of phones under about ₹20,000 ship without NFC at all, which makes an NFC-based blocker unbuyable for a lot of people in India. Every Android phone has Bluetooth. Turning Bluetooth off does not end a session either — the lock is remembered and simply waits for the key to come back into range.

The commercial shape, for completeness: the app is free with no subscription, the key is a one-time purchase in rupees quoted ex-GST, GST invoice included, shipped free across India, running on a single AAA cell you can replace at any shop. Emergency unlocks exist and are deliberately capped, so losing the key is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

What to actually do

Try Focus mode on a schedule for two weeks. If you find yourself tapping Take a break daily, the problem is not the schedule, it is that ending the session costs nothing. Either move to a second profile — free, strict, slightly annoying — or move the unlock off the phone.
