Disclosure: we make Spark, one of the products here. Every other figure was read from that vendor's own page on 23 September 2026.
Why a physical blocker at all
An Indian smartphone user spends about 4.95 hours a day in apps, and 94.3% of 15-to-24-year-olds are online. Most people have already tried Screen Time, Digital Wellbeing and deleting the app for a week. Those fail for a structural reason rather than a personal one: the person setting the limit holds the passcode that lifts it. A physical blocker moves the off switch to an object, so the undo costs a walk instead of a tap.

The import question nobody answers
International lists quote dollar prices as though that is the cost. For an Indian buyer it is not. A $59 device is roughly ₹5,000 before anything else, and then there is shipping, the exchange-rate spread on your card, and customs duty, which is charged on import and is yours to pay on delivery unless the seller has prepaid it. That is how a $59 Brick becomes a ₹7,999 marketplace listing with a 28-day wait.
The free route, which is genuinely good
If you are on an iPhone, Foqos is free, open source and works with any NFC tag or a printed QR code; on Android, TapBlok does the same thing, installed as an APK from GitHub. Buy an NTAG213 sticker for a few rupees, stick it inside a cupboard in another room, and you have the mechanism without the product. You do the setup, and there is nobody to ask when it breaks.
How to do it with a plain NFC tagWhat a tag can and cannot do on each platform, and what has to be listening for it to block anything.
Read thisWhich one to buy
- Try Digital Wellbeing or Screen Time for two weeks with the PIN held by somebody else. If it holds, buy nothing.
- If you want to spend nothing and are willing to set it up: Foqos on iPhone, TapBlok on Android.
- If you want a finished product bought in rupees with local shipping and no customs question: that is what Spark is.
- If you want the best-known brand and can wait a month: import Brick.
- If you need calls and payments locked away too: a timed lock box, and accept that it takes the whole phone.
Common questions
Is there an Indian alternative to Brick?
Spark is the closest: a physical key with a free app, priced in rupees and shipped within India, with no subscription. Detach is the cheapest way in from abroad, at $9.99 for the card with free worldwide shipping.
Will I pay customs duty on an imported blocker?
Possibly. Duty is assessed on import and is normally collected on delivery unless the seller prepaid it at checkout. Brick says duties are prepaid in most countries and may be due on delivery where they are not.
Do these work on budget Android phones?
An NFC blocker needs an NFC reader, and many budget Android phones do not have one. Check your phone before buying anything NFC — every iPhone that runs these apps has one.
Can a physical blocker be bypassed?
Yes. Uninstalling the app ends a session on iPhone, and on Android Safe Mode gets past most strict modes. The point is not that it is impossible, it is that the undo costs a walk to another room.
Bluetooth or NFC, one-time, in rupees, shipped in India. The app is free.

One ranking axis: what it takes to get back in. Physical keys, software strict modes and gentle nudges, with what each actually enforces.
11 min readPut the unlock in another room.
Once your Spark is paired, locking is one tap and works with Bluetooth off. Unlocking means walking to the key and holding your phone against it — which is the whole difference between deciding to stop and having to stand up. The app is free; the key is the one-time buy.
