The best app blockers in 2026, ranked by how hard they are to bypass
One ranking axis: what it takes to get back in. Physical keys, software strict modes and gentle nudges, with what each actually enforces.

Disclosure: we make Spark, a physical blocker in tier one below. Rival facts were read off each vendor's own page on 23 September 2026. The last section is about what none of these products can do, ours included.
Why bypass resistance is the only useful ranking
Every blocker works on day one. The interesting question is week three, when you are tired and the reason to unlock feels genuinely reasonable. At that moment the only thing that matters is the cost of the undo — and that cost is a property of the mechanism, not of the marketing.
Tier 1 — the unlock leaves the phone
You end a session with a physical object. Leave it in another room and the undo costs a walk, which is enough friction that most late-night unlocks simply do not happen.
| Product | Price | Platforms | The honest limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spark (ours) | From ₹999 + GST one-time, free app | iOS 17+, Android 12+ | Deleting the app ends a session on iPhone; on Android, Safe Mode still gets past Strict mode |
| Brick | $59 one-time | iOS 17+, Android 12+ | You can start a session without the device, and it ships from five countries, none of them India |
| Detach | Free app, $9.99 card | iOS 17+, Android | Says the card is the only way out; it is still Screen Time underneath on iPhone |
| Bloom | $39 one-time | iPhone and Android | Sold out when we checked on 23 Sep 2026 |
| Blok | Card $29; full app access $59.99/yr or $9.99/mo per Blok's own page | iOS 14+, Android 8+ | The subscription is the real price, and the card was sold out when we checked |
| Autonomous Key | $9 one-time | iOS 15+, Android 8+ | A tap opens a window of up to 60 minutes, so the block is periodic rather than continuous |
| Foqos + NFC tag | Free, open source | iPhone only, iOS 17.6+ | You hide your own tag; nothing stops you keeping it on the desk |
| TapBlok + NFC tag | Free, open source | Android 7+ | Emergency override is a hold of 30 seconds to 15 minutes, and it is on by default |
Tier 2 — software that makes the undo expensive
No object, but the exit is deliberately slow or hidden. This is the right tier if you do not want to carry anything, and it is the tier where the honest claims and the marketing diverge most.
- Cold Turkey, on Windows and macOS only, is the strictest thing in this list: it can block the task manager and the system clock, and a block can be locked behind retyping up to 5,000 random characters. It does not run on phones.
- AppBlock's Strict Mode on Android uses device-admin permission to resist being switched off — though a 2026 Play review describes getting past it by typing the long password the app itself displays.
- Lockdown on iPhone advertises no early exit at all: once the timer runs, the block holds until it ends. Free with premium at $4.99 a month or $24.99 a year.
- Opal's Hard Mode says “no way out. You can't turn Opal off.” It is still software you administer, on a phone you own.
- Freedom's Locked Mode syncs one session across every device you are signed into, which is the useful bit if you own a laptop and a phone.
Tier 3 — nudges
These interrupt the reach rather than prevent it, and they are genuinely enough for some people. Forest grows a tree that dies when you leave; the exit is a button marked Give Up. One sec and ScreenZen add a breath or a delay before an app opens. Nothing here holds against a decision, and none of them pretends to.
Nobody here is unbreakable, including us
You administer your own phone, so every product in this article can be defeated by someone determined: uninstall the app, reset the device, use a second phone, or simply wait out the timer. A blocker that claims otherwise is either selling something or has not read the platform documentation. What you are buying is the size of the gap between the impulse and the app — and a walk to another room is the largest gap anything on a phone can give you.

Read thisCommon questions
What is the best app blocker overall in 2026?
For most people the best one is the strictest thing they will keep using. That is usually a physical blocker for phones — Spark, Brick, Detach or Bloom — and Cold Turkey for a laptop. If you will not carry an object, Lockdown on iPhone and AppBlock on Android are the strongest software options.
What is the best free app blocker?
On iPhone, Foqos with any NFC tag. On Android, TapBlok with a tag, or Digital Wellbeing with an app-limit PIN. All three are free, and the first two give you a physical unlock without buying a device.
Are physical app blockers worth it?
They are worth it if you have already tried software and kept lifting your own limits. They are not worth it if you have never set a Screen Time passcode — try the free version of the idea first.
Which blockers have no subscription?
Spark, Brick, Bloom, Detach, the Autonomous Key, Foqos and TapBlok are one-time or free. Blok, Opal, Freedom and Unpluq charge on a recurring basis, and Unpluq's tag stops working without one.

Once your Spark is paired, locking is one tap and works with Bluetooth off. Unlocking means walking to the key and holding your phone against it — which is the whole difference between deciding to stop and having to stand up. The app is free; the key is the one-time buy.
