How to block Instagram, and make it stick
Every method on iPhone and Android, in the order worth trying: the free ones first, then what to do when you keep lifting your own limit.

Start with the free tools, properly
Instagram's own limits — the “take a break” reminder and the daily time limit inside the app — are the weakest layer, because the app enforcing them is the one you are trying to leave. Use the operating system instead. On iPhone that is Screen Time; on Android, Digital Wellbeing. Both can cap Instagram to a minute a day, which is effectively a block, and both hold better when the passcode or PIN belongs to someone else.
- Turn off every Instagram notification first. A block you have to think about is weaker than an app that stops asking for you.
- Set the OS limit to one minute a day rather than blocking outright — an app that vanishes invites reinstalling; an app that opens and closes teaches the habit to give up.
- Put the passcode with a person, not in your notes app. This is the whole difference between a limit and a suggestion.
- Log out and delete the app on top, if you are not running a business account. Reinstalling and signing in is a real cost at 11 p.m.

Most people who want to block Instagram do not want to leave Instagram. They want to stop losing forty minutes to Reels. If that is you, block the feed rather than the app: limit Instagram to a minute a day for the scroll, and keep messaging where you actually need it on a separate allowance.
When the daily limit keeps losing to ReelsWhat to do when the limit is set and the reach happens anyway.

If you have set the limit three times and lifted it three times, more settings will not help. What changes the outcome is moving the unlock off the phone: a blocker whose off switch is a physical object you keep in another room. That is the category Spark is in, along with Brick, Bloom, Detach and the free NFC-tag route on both platforms.
Disclosure: we make Spark. The comparison below includes the free options, and for a lot of people they are enough.

How do I block Instagram permanently?
Delete the account, or delete the app and give the password to someone else. Everything short of that is a limit you can lift, which is fine — most people want a limit, not a permanent exit.
How do I block Instagram but keep WhatsApp?
Block per app, not per category. Screen Time and Digital Wellbeing both let you pick individual apps; keep calls, messages and maps out of any blocklist.
Can I block Instagram at certain times only?
Yes. Screen Time Schedule on iOS 27 (Downtime on older versions) and Digital Wellbeing's Bedtime mode both do this, and every third-party blocker has schedules.
Does blocking Instagram on the phone block the website?
No. App limits restrict apps, not browsers. Add instagram.com under Screen Time's web content restrictions, or use a blocker that covers websites too.

The best app blockers in India, honestly compared
What you can actually buy in India, what each costs in rupees, and which ones ship here. Free tools first, then the apps, then the physical keys.

One ranking axis: what it takes to get back in. Physical keys, software strict modes and gentle nudges, with what each actually enforces.

Once your Spark is paired, locking is one tap and works with Bluetooth off. Unlocking means walking to the key and holding your phone against it — which is the whole difference between deciding to stop and having to stand up. The app is free; the key is the one-time buy.
